The various types of crowns and caps

Depending on your dental health, the dentist will decide the procedure that needs to be performed to maintain it. Although your routine dental visits entail cleaning the teeth, filling in the cavities, and the different bonding, which is required, even the more complicated procedures have become quite easy to perform. Root canals and wisdom tooth extractions are slightly more complicated issues. Along with this, the placement of dental crowns and caps is also quite prominent. Crowns and caps are the same thing and are a more permanent form of dental filling. Depending on the functions that they will serve, they are divided into different categories.

The various types of crowns and caps
Here are some of the common types of crowns and caps.

Types of dental crown and caps
Crowns and caps are basically fixed prosthetics objects which are cemented and drilled into a tooth so as to fill it. The four different types of crowns and caps are as follows

  • Ceramic caps
As the name suggests, ceramic crowns and caps are made out of materials such as porcelain. They are typically utilized for the restoration of the front teeth and they are also preferred for front teeth as they fuse with the natural white color sometimes.
  • Porcelain fused to metals
While ceramic caps are common, porcelain fused to metals are also being largely preferred.
These crowns and caps provide much stronger support as compared to ceramic caps. They are also much more durable.
  • Gold alloys
Gold alloys are one of the most durable crowns and caps. The gold alloys are basically a mixture of copper, metals and even copper. Along with providing the very strong bond to the tooth for support, it does not even fracture and is not even susceptible to wearing off with the tooth.
  • Base metal alloys
When you want to fix the base metal alloys, then you would need to get the least strong tooth removed. These crowns and caps are made up of non-noble metals, which are beneficial as they are quite resistant to corrosion.
  • Differentiating the types
The basic thumb rule which differentiates the different types of crowns and caps is the sealing ability and the filling material used. Additionally, it will be divided based on the condition of the underlying tooth. Especially when it comes to the porcelain crowns and caps, the sealing ability will only be decided on how strong does the filling have to be.

If you are looking for durability, then the maximum durability can only be found with gold as well as metal alloys. The porcelain crowns tend to wear out easily if they are put under pressure as compared to the ones made with stronger materials.

While sometimes they may become really loose or may even end up falling out, the crowns and caps can last for a lifetime if they are maintained properly. If you follow proper oral health and dental routine, then you would not need to worry about the wearing out of dental crowns and caps.
